with all this talk of bitthdays and bacteria i nearly forgot that the biggest non-world cup game of the year is on this afternoon. today is the champions league final from lisbon. turns out its an all madrid final with real madrid up against this years spanish league champs, athletico madrid, who are the first non barcelona/real madrid winners in 10 years. athletico beat real in last years copa del rey final (look it up if you care what it is) after years of being essentially the ny mets or the la clippers, the other team in a city where one team dominates the headlines. historically though they have won more la liga championships (10) than anyone but real madrid (32) or barcelona (22) so its not completely unprecedented. but they will have trouble holding on to their stars (their top scorer like last year is all but gone) after this season which is the plight of many teams not among the elite dozen or so. but surviving this far in the champions league will mean about $50 million in tv revenue and adding that to fees for selling their top players should put them in a position to be competitive for the next couple of years. at least until someone comes along and poaches their coach.

and dont forget, world cup starts in three weeks so its time to pretend to care about soccer for a month. if you can do it for the olympics i dont see why you cant do it for soccer. ill start you off.... i mean, can you believe klinsmann kept donovan off the 23 man roster!?!

oh, the champions league final starts on fox in three minutes.

for all you portlanders wondering why everyone not sporting a handlebar mustache is extra enthusiastic today, here is your two minute recap. nothing beats a buzzer beater to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

just noticed it was kentucky derby day. if you have absolutely no life and a love of horse racing you can watch the four hours of coverage on nbcsn prior to the three hours of coverage on nbc proper. somewhere in there is a two minute race by horses owned by saudi billionaires unlike the soccer i will be watching where the billionaire owners are from dubai. at least no ones whipping them on the field of play just those unfortunates out of frame building the stadiums. ok, thats in qatar for the world cup in 2022 but you dont care anyway so whats the difference.

i couldnt come up with the third person in a potential group that was named as an interested party to purchase the la clippers. the two i recalled were oprah and david geffen, two heavy hitters in their own right but the third who escaped me was larry ellison who could by and sell the other two partners a number of times over although just suggesting that would probably disqualify him from contention.

I think I mentioned this before, but a kid from my (and b.'s) high school (long after we were there obviously) has gone on to be quite a basketball player: Nik Stauskas. He's a guard on the second seed University of Michigan squad, and Big Ten player of the year.

When we were in school the basketball team was pitiful (I played varsity!) but now has become something of a powerhouse. Back in the day we were known for hockey, with 3 players who were there during our years (out of ~400 in the entire school) making it to the NHL. Not sure how these things work, and why they suddenly are good at basketball. Maybe you recruit the right coach? Or just get lucky with a great player and then others follow?

In any case, Go Lions. Or something.

Once I was able to find the NBC 2014 Olympics full replay stream I discovered that it doesn't have pause, fast forward or rewind functions. The commercial breaks are frequent but too short to be of much use. Guess I should have a cooler and piss jar next to the sofa.
