A couple of fools taking a chance on April.
A pair of Red-tailed Hawks survey the brown and gray of early Spring.

These birds have been hanging around the north end of the Park all Winter, and now it looks like they plan on staying. I’ve seen them mating, and carrying sticks: a sure sign of nest construction. On this occasion I caught them in a tender moment, sharing a rat. Maybe they derive from the long-standing nest on Fifth Avenue at 73rd St, in which case this is the only life they know, but the city is not an easy place for big birds to make a go of it. I wish them the best, although it’s kind of a pain when they come around scaring all the little birds I’m trying to see. Who’s fooling who?
