The Hawthorn fruits, (or haws) above, are not yet ripe, but the Crab Apples below have attained a redness that will soon attract some forager.





Both fruits resemble rose hips, betraying their lineage. In fact, these are in a much more "natural" state than full-scale apples, not to mention pears, plums, and cherries, all of which are rosaceous, and have long been bred for bigger and sweeter fruits. No plant family is more entwined in Western culture than the roses, but there are some aliens abroad as well?
