the play it was based on was written in 1916. (this was the second movie adaptation.) from the description it seems pretty similar. perhaps the husband isnt quite as meek in the original, its somewhat vague in the retelling, but the banzie role still seems like the one driving the action forward. doesnt seem unusual for a play, though what do i know, maybe its particularly british. they suggest king lear as an inspiration with the foolish father and three daughters, one headstrong and true of heart.
