Outlier categories helped to limit eligibility. For example, directors that peaked during the Silent Era are omitted from participation (EX: D.W. Griffith, F.W. Murnau, Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, Buster Keaton, et al.)

Another outlier category created purely to promote play-in among non-cinephiles was to limit eligibility for International Directors that did not necessarily cross over w/ a Hollywood career era (EX: Godard, Kurosawa, Truffaut, Fassbinder, Fellini, Tarkovsky, etc.).

A criteria was determined that directors needed a canon of 5 or more films, purely out of necessity for narrowing the pool of incredible talent (EX: Jordan Peele, Duncan Jones, Richard Kelly, Alex Garland, Jennifer Lee, Charlie Kaufman, Steve McQueen, Greta Gerwig).
