This is apropos of nothing but on the AFI list of best one hundred movies all time of the one hundred listings there was only one movie I have never heard of, and that was 1949's The Third Man, and I am now finding myself overhwhelmed with the notion of what have I missed.
The Third Man is directed by Carol Reed, but it might as well be Orson Welles, who plays the mysterious Harry Lime. An expressionistically lit chase through the sewers of postwar Vienna is pure Welles. It's first-rate film noir.

i always thought welles directed it. great movie.
