Salesmanship
November 15, 2002
Karl Rove, Senior Advisor to President George Bush, spoke at the University of Utah a couple days ago. One wouldn't expect much dissent in that forum, but there was at least one interesting question.
A woman mentioned the 200,000 anti-war protesters who were in D.C. recently, and asked how their message could reach the president.
Rove responded with, "The way to do it is to do it the way that everybody else does, which is to talk to your representatives and petition the Congress and petition the president. You talk about 200,000 people though, with all due respect, I worry about the 3,000 people killed on 9-11."
I would have liked to have been there to offer a follow-up question. "Despite vigorous efforts, no linkage has been established between Iraq and the attacks of September 11. In fact, Saddam is an enemy of bin Laden. Yet you just implied a linkage. So, my question is this. Are you completely clueless about these critical issues, or do you think we are a bunch of morons who will buy whatever you're selling? To recapitulate, that's a) you're ignorant, or b) you think we're morons. Which is it?"
