DeBruhlisms
For years British Formula 1 fans (and BTCC fans) had to put up with the inane commentary of Murray Walker. Several collections of "Walkerisms" can be found on the web. Television personality Clive James had this to say about Murray, "In his quieter moments he sounds like his trousers are on fire."
In the US, F1 coverage is provided by Speed Channel, and a team of three announcers. Steve Matchett is a former F1 mechanic who has great knowledge of the cars. David Hobbs is a former F! driver with tremendous insight and who posseses an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of F1. And then there's Rick DeBruhl.
The Rickster sounds like a Steve Correll parody of a bad announcer. While Murray was an excitable chap who tended to blurt nonsense from time to time, Rick is just an idiot.
Today in practice at the Hungarian Gran Prix, Ralph Firman of the Jordon team had a massive hit into a wall due to loss of his rear wing. He spun, bounced across grass, skirted the gravel traps, and hit sidways into a tire barrier at high speed.
During a replay, the announcing team had this to say ...
David: Boy ... just not losing any speed hardly at all. (as car bounces across grass)Okay, so I made up the part in blue.
Steve: No. Wow! (as car hits barrier)
David: Whoa, right into that, whuua! (as tire barrier flies apart)
Rick: And look at the photographers scramble. (as a couple photographers duck)
Steve: Absolutely side-on impact.
Rick: He was just fortunate that he was able to bounce so much before he got there.
David: Rick?! Fortunate that the car bounced?! Gawd! You are such a complete moron!
Steve: Rick, you daft twit. The car hit the barrier at such high speed because it bounced. There's no mechanical grip whatsoever when the car is airborne.
David: In all my decades as driver and commentator I've never come across an announcer with such a tenuous grasp on the obvious. Perhaps you would be more at home on the Alabama mudbuggy circuit.

Two reports on CIA failures ...
Germany Warned CIA About Sept. 11 Terror Pilot, Stern Says
Bloomberg -- August 13, 2003
Journal -- August 15, 2003
an English language television news service of
Dutche Welle
interview of Michael Luders, terrorism expert
My personal impression is that the German authorities are very effective when it comes to analyzing the terrorist threat in this country. They have good contacts, good links to various cells not only in Germany. And it is indeed quite embarrassing that the American authorities, namely the CIA, did not take this note seriously, and did not inform the FBI on this potential terrorist attack, although it could have been prevented. Of course, there have been other factors that have indicated before that the security apparatus in American did not really do all too well. And this is just another example for the blunt failure of especially the CIA in this context.I don't think Michael will get an invite from Fox News Channel anytime soon.

Dr. Paul, your analogy is slipping ...
The Read on Wolfowitz
The Washington Post -- January 27, 2003
David Ignatius
We discussed the possibility that the liberation of Iraq might be like the liberation of France in 1944 -- in that, although the indigenous Resistance played only a minimal role in driving out the enemy, this mythic movement proved crucial in rebuilding the country later. "France is closer to the right analogy" than postwar Japan, Wolfowitz said.tip o' the hat to Pascale Combelles Siegel

Dr. Paul is an Idiot
Wolfowitz out of context, and out of his mind ...
In context, and still out of his mind ...
MR. RUSSERT: But is Senator Lugar wrong in saying that we should appropriate $16 billion a year for the next four years now?previous in series of Dr. Paul's Words of Wisdom
DR. WOLFOWITZ: Tim, I don’t know the exact figure. Ambassador Bremer is trying to come up with a best estimate for the next 12 months. There’s a basic point here maybe about planning that people need to understand. You can’t write a plan for a military situation, and this is basically a military situation. It is like a railroad timetable. There are too many things that you learn as you go, and it may be exactly what Senator Lugar says. It could be more. It could be less. There should be no underestimating the task in front of us but there should also be no underestimating its importance.
