Religious Extremist Terrorists of the Day

The King David Hotel bombing (July 22, 1946) was a bombing attack against the British government of Palestine by members of Irgun —a militant Zionist group. The Irgun exploded a bomb at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which had been the base for the British Secretariat, the military command and a branch of the Criminal Investigation Division (police). 91 people were killed, most of them civilians: 28 British, 41 Arab, 17 Jewish, and 5 other. Around 45 people were injured.

The attack was initially ordered by David Ben Gurion, who was in the United States, but he later changed his mind and ordered the bombing to be cancelled. But Menachem Begin, the head of Irgun, went ahead anyway. Both Ben Gurion and Begin would later become Israeli Prime Ministers. The attack was commanded by Yosef Avni and Yisrael Levi.

Radical Christian Terrorist Cleric of the Day*

The Church of the American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, led by Jeff Berry of Butler, Indiana, is the most active Klan organization in America. While other KKK groups across the country are weakening and becoming less visible, the American Knights are flooding neighborhoods across the country with their propaganda and holding rallies in cities from the Midwest to the South.
"You black bastards are destroying your own race; we have a nice rope for you treasonous people."

Friedman's Lack of Introspection

In a column reprinted in today's Merc, Mr. Tom sez ...

Katrina deprived the Bush team of the energy source that propelled it forward for the past four years: Sept. 11 and the halo over the presidency that came with it. The events of Sept. 11 created a deference in the U.S. public, and media, for the administration, which exploited it to the hilt to push an uncompassionate conservative agenda on tax cuts and runaway spending, on which it never could have gotten elected. That deference is over.
Friedman makes this comment without referring to his own slavish bootlickery.

Radical Homicidal Christian Cleric of the Day

Jim Jones's the Peoples Temple was formed in Indianapolis, Indiana during the late 1950s. Jones and his 140 followers then moved to Redwood Valley in Mendocino County, California, as they believed that they would be safe from nuclear fallout in case of a nuclear attack on the United States. In the late 1960s, members of Jones's congregation had dwindled to less than a hundred and were on the verge of collapse but Jones managed to secure an affiliation with the Disciples of Christ and in turn kept the survival of the Temple. Jones's affiliation with the church boosted the Temple's reputation and spread his influence in the West Coast area. Jones then moved his congregation again to his main church in San Francisco in 1971 and opened another one in Los Angeles.

Radical Christian Terrorist Cleric of the Day*

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), formed in 1987, is a rebel paramilitary group operating mainly in northern Uganda. The group is engaged in an armed rebellion against the Ugandan government in what is now one of Africa's longest-running conflicts. It is led by Joseph Kony, who proclaims himself a spirit medium and apparently wishes to establish a state based on his unique interpretation of Biblical millenarianism. The LRA have been accused of widespread human rights violations, including the abduction of civilians, the use of child soldiers and a number of massacres.

Radical Hate-Monger Christianist Cleric of the Day

Wikipedia

Fred Waldron Phelps (born November 13, 1929), dubbed by detractors as "The Al Capone of Christianity," is the controversial leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, an alleged cult based in Topeka, Kansas, United States. The church is located in the basement of his home, which is located inside of a block-wide, fenced compound, the other houses in which are occupied by nine of his thirteen children. Phelps claims that he is a prophet sent to tell the world of the supreme hatred of God, and that only he and the members of Westboro have any hope of going to Heaven. The group, which has roughly 100 members, 90% of whom are related to Phelps through blood or marriage, is built around the core theology "God hates fags," with all of Phelps' activities stemming from this mantra. Gay rights activists, as well as both mainstream and fundamentalist Christians, have denounced him as a producer of anti-gay propaganda and violence-inspiring hate speech.
Associated Press August 28, 2005

SMYRNA, Tenn. - Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq.

The church members were met with scorn from local residents. They chased the church members cars’ down a highway, waving flags and screaming “God bless America.”

“My husband is over there, so I’m here to show my support,” 41-year-old Connie Ditmore said as she waved and American flag and as tears came to her eyes. “To do this at a funeral is disrespectful of a family, no matter what your beliefs are.”

Radical Fundamentalist Terrorist of the Day

from wikipedia ...

Eric Robert Rudolph, also known as the Olympic Bomber (born September 19, 1966) is an extreme right-wing American terrorist who committed a series of bombings across the southern United States, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to at least 150 others. Rudolph declared his bombings as part of a guerrilla campaign against abortion, "the homosexual agenda" and perceived support for them from the United States government.

Crazy Eyes

Lorrie Beth Slonsky was on NPR today, telling the tale of horror that is the Gretna Blockade. (This American Life, episode 296, After the Flood).

She's one of the paramedics who wrote a first hand report of the blockade. Cathy Golden of Boston also appears on the show, and confirms the account.

She spoke about the incident in which their encampment on the Ponchartrian Expressway (US-90) was broken up by a Gretna cop.

Just as dusk set in, a sheriff showed up, jumped out of his patrol vehicle, aimed his gun at our faces and screamed, “Get off the fucking freeway.” A helicopter arrived and used the wind from its blades to blow away our flimsy structures. As we retreated, the sheriff loaded up his truck with our food and water.
On air she described this cop as having a "crazy look" in his eyes as he brandished his firearm. Paramedics deal with dire situations in the normal course of their day. So when a paramedic describes a police thug as having a crazy look in his eyes to the point of being frightening, that's got to be one tweaked out pig.

Seems like the Reconstuction with the capital "R" needs to come back to at least one cracker town.

Of course, a humid, polluted metropolis that combines the innovative urban planning of Sugarland, Texas with the vibrant, multiethnic culture of Greenwich, Conn. might not be quite as big of a tourist draw. ... But we should probably try to look on the bright side: In the new New Orleans, city residents might actually be able to cross the river to Gretna without getting shot at.

Gretna Blockade

More one the Gretna Blockade ... Here's an excerpt, but read the whole thing.

We organized ourselves and the 200 of us set off for the bridge with great excitement and hope. As we marched pasted the convention center, many locals saw our determined and optimistic group and asked where we were headed. We told them about the great news. Families immediately grabbed their few belongings and quickly our numbers doubled and then doubled again. Babies in strollers now joined us, people using crutches, elderly clasping walkers and others people in wheelchairs. We marched the 2-3 miles to the freeway and up the steep incline to the Bridge. It now began to pour down rain, but it did not dampen our enthusiasm.

As we approached the bridge, armed Gretna sheriffs formed a line across the foot of the bridge. Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing their weapons over our heads. This sent the crowd fleeing in various directions. As the crowd scattered and dissipated, a few of us inched forward and managed to engage some of the sheriffs inconversation. We told them of our conversation with the police commander and of the commander's assurances. The sheriffs informed us there were no buses waiting. The commander had lied to us to get us to move.

We questioned why we couldn't cross the bridge anyway, especially as there was little traffic on the 6-lane highway. They responded that the West Bank was not going to become New Orleans and there would be no Superdomes in their City. These were code words for if you are poor and black, you are not crossing the Mississippi River and you were not getting out of New Orleans.
This story is duplicated many places. This seems like a pretty authoritative source. It includes this note about the authors. Note: Bradshaw and Slonsky are paramedics frorm California that were attending the EMS conference in New Orleans. Larry Bradsahw is the chief shop steward, Paramedic Chapter, SEIU Local 790; and Lorrie Beth Slonsky is steward, Paramedic Chapter, SEIU Local 790.[California]

Crescent City Connection

The Blockade of the Crescent City Connection should be burned into the psyche of the nation in the way that the Collapse of the Cypress Structure was during the Loma Prieta quake of 1989.

Residents, primarily poor and black, helped commuters, primarily white and middle class get out of their cars and off the Cypress Structure. Armed white folks, under color of office, blocked poor black people from crossing the Crescent City Connection, a magnificent steel bridge over the Mississippi, into Gretna, trapping them under deteriorating conditions at the New Orleans Convention Center.

This picture, at the height of the flood, shows the Convention Center, high and dry, and a clear path to the bridge. Shepard Smith and Geraldo reported this situation from these sites, with great anguish in their hearts, on Fox News Channel.

This picture, from a DKos diarist, shows another angle. "This pre-flooding image showing the convention center (red) and approaches (colorized). The convention center itself is a little over a half-mile long. One of the approaches drops to street level right in front of the center."

crescent city connection

The still celebrated Battle of Liberty Place of 1874, and the monument should also be remembered in this context. The people of Gretna sure the hell wouldn't have let a bunch of little blue haired white ladies sit in that hell hole for three days with no food, water or sanitation. Lord knows Resident Bush would have sent in special forces to protect white women from crack gangsters rather that wandering around the country to eat cake, speechify and play his git-fiddle.

The Crescent City Connection Blockade of 2005 is a stain on this nation.

Followership

Bush's defense regarding his inaction on 8/29 (and 8/30 ... and 8/31 ... ) is the same as his defense regarding 9/11.

Leadership duhn't matter.

Breaking it down, he's saying about NOLA that the locals messed it up, that fed'ral burrahcracy done messed it up. T'weren't anything a good ol' boy could do. Damn gumment screwed things up.

Dude.

He's one of the most powerful people in the history of the world. He has at his fingertips more money, more people, more equipment, more command & control than any man on the planet.

T'weren't nuthin he could do?

Fine. I'll stipulate that. Further, I'll stipulate that he is an incompetent poor little rich boy who never once made an honest living. Since he's never faced a real challenge, other than prying his face out of a beer stain, he has no idea how to snap to attention, and get to work like his life depended on it.

Impeach Bush for Dereliction of Duty.

Letter to Boxer

Senator Boxer,

I have friends in the Treme district of New Orleans, the oldest urban black neighborhood in the US. They did not deserve to be abandoned by FEMA and their president.

I want you to do four things for me:

1) Make sure the recovery and restoration of New Orleans are funded and managed in a humane manner.

2) Investigate why FEMA failed. Name names. I don't care if the Republican majority won't let you investigate. Screw em! Asking permission is not an option. Rent a hall at a hotel, and take testimony!

3) Bring the Guard Home. Now.

4) Impeach and convict Bush.

That will do for starters.

cheers,

-Mark

Bush Fiddled While New Orleans Drowned

It was known Monday morning that a flood was in progress. That New Orleans was dying. And Bush sat on his lazy, pampered, spoiled, rich boy ass. I hope that people who voted for Bush realize that they put this country in the hands of a dangerous idot. This must be a proud moment for Republicans everywhere.

My Mom (a Republican and a Texan) replied to an email about Bush's response to this disaster by saying that he must be losing his mind. Ummm ... no. This is the same idiot who sat reading a book about a goat while our country was under attack. Same idiot, different disaster.

Crime and Punishment

After some pondering, I've finally determined an appropriate punishment for Bush. Impeachment is for lying, corruption and blowjobs. What we need is something with a little more impact. Something with a military influence, since failure as a commander in the face of grave danger is the crux of the matter.

I've got one word: keelhaul.

We need to have the ghost of Jean Lafite emerge on a corsair from the coastal bayous, sieze the preznit by the scruff of his neck, give the smirking moron a summary court marshall on deck, and keelhaul the heartless bastard over a hull crusted with 200 years of barnacles..

[Note: Ghost Pirates are imaginary entities and do not constitute an actual threat to any elected officials -- smirking fucktards or otherwise.]

To Do List

  • Once Mandy checks in, send her a large check to help with immediate expenses.
  • Set aside vacation time to go to New Orleans, at the appropriate time, to help in person. I was thinking today that it would be nice to go there Thanksgiving week and fry up a bunch of turkeys. But who knows what NO is going to look like in three months.
  • Advocate in whatever forms I can think of a) the return of the National Guard to the US and b) the impeachment of George W. Bush.

Worst

I actually engaged in a debate a couple of weeks ago about whether Bush is worse than Nixon. I can't believe how incredibly naive I was. How foolish and gullible I was. I took the "Nixon was worse" side of things.

I can't imagine Nixon, even in his deepest funk, sitting back and watching this unfold. He didn't care about poor black people who would never vote for him. He did care about his reputation as a man who got things done.

But Bush went to political rallies. And not just one. He had time to give a war speech. He had time to do one of those down-homey, aww shucks, goober-headed town hall events. Talkin' ta seniors about that ol' medicare. During the flood. While people died.

How could I be such an idiot? How could I have failed to plumb the depth of Bush's incompetence? What an idiot I was. "Nixon was worse"?

I can't stand the mendacity. I can't stand the incompetence. But to have both? That dog won't hunt.

Impeach the Goober.

Among the Many Crucial Questions the RIght Didn't Want to Ask Before Invading Iraq, This is One

There are real issues of federalism and fairness when it comes to asking Americans to spend untold billions on the reconstruction effort. Again, I lean toward doing it because that's what great nations do. But I'd like to hear the price tag first.
