Religious Extremist Terrorists of the Day
The attack was initially ordered by David Ben Gurion, who was in the United States, but he later changed his mind and ordered the bombing to be cancelled. But Menachem Begin, the head of Irgun, went ahead anyway. Both Ben Gurion and Begin would later become Israeli Prime Ministers. The attack was commanded by Yosef Avni and Yisrael Levi.

Radical Hate-Monger Christianist Cleric of the Day
Fred Waldron Phelps (born November 13, 1929), dubbed by detractors as "The Al Capone of Christianity," is the controversial leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, an alleged cult based in Topeka, Kansas, United States. The church is located in the basement of his home, which is located inside of a block-wide, fenced compound, the other houses in which are occupied by nine of his thirteen children. Phelps claims that he is a prophet sent to tell the world of the supreme hatred of God, and that only he and the members of Westboro have any hope of going to Heaven. The group, which has roughly 100 members, 90% of whom are related to Phelps through blood or marriage, is built around the core theology "God hates fags," with all of Phelps' activities stemming from this mantra. Gay rights activists, as well as both mainstream and fundamentalist Christians, have denounced him as a producer of anti-gay propaganda and violence-inspiring hate speech.
SMYRNA, Tenn. - Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq.
The church members were met with scorn from local residents. They chased the church members cars down a highway, waving flags and screaming God bless America.
My husband is over there, so Im here to show my support, 41-year-old Connie Ditmore said as she waved and American flag and as tears came to her eyes. To do this at a funeral is disrespectful of a family, no matter what your beliefs are.

- Government is inherently ineffective, and Republicans are doing their best to prove this proposition in both the US and Iraq.

New York Times ...
picks up the Gretna Blockade story.
Crazy Eyes
Lorrie Beth Slonsky was on NPR today, telling the tale of horror that is the Gretna Blockade. (This American Life, episode 296, After the Flood).
She's one of the paramedics who wrote a first hand report of the blockade. Cathy Golden of Boston also appears on the show, and confirms the account.
She spoke about the incident in which their encampment on the Ponchartrian Expressway (US-90) was broken up by a Gretna cop.
Seems like the Reconstuction with the capital "R" needs to come back to at least one cracker town.

One Motherfucking Cracker That Needs To Do Hard Time in Angola State Prison
Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson confirmed that his officers were under his orders to seal off the suburban city of 17,500 residents.

Gretna Blockade
More one the Gretna Blockade ... Here's an excerpt, but read the whole thing.
As we approached the bridge, armed Gretna sheriffs formed a line across the foot of the bridge. Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing their weapons over our heads. This sent the crowd fleeing in various directions. As the crowd scattered and dissipated, a few of us inched forward and managed to engage some of the sheriffs inconversation. We told them of our conversation with the police commander and of the commander's assurances. The sheriffs informed us there were no buses waiting. The commander had lied to us to get us to move.
We questioned why we couldn't cross the bridge anyway, especially as there was little traffic on the 6-lane highway. They responded that the West Bank was not going to become New Orleans and there would be no Superdomes in their City. These were code words for if you are poor and black, you are not crossing the Mississippi River and you were not getting out of New Orleans.

Crescent City Connection
The Blockade of the Crescent City Connection should be burned into the psyche of the nation in the way that the Collapse of the Cypress Structure was during the Loma Prieta quake of 1989.
Residents, primarily poor and black, helped commuters, primarily white and middle class get out of their cars and off the Cypress Structure. Armed white folks, under color of office, blocked poor black people from crossing the Crescent City Connection, a magnificent steel bridge over the Mississippi, into Gretna, trapping them under deteriorating conditions at the New Orleans Convention Center.
This picture, at the height of the flood, shows the Convention Center, high and dry, and a clear path to the bridge. Shepard Smith and Geraldo reported this situation from these sites, with great anguish in their hearts, on Fox News Channel.
This picture, from a DKos diarist, shows another angle. "This pre-flooding image showing the convention center (red) and approaches (colorized). The convention center itself is a little over a half-mile long. One of the approaches drops to street level right in front of the center."

The still celebrated Battle of Liberty Place of 1874, and the monument should also be remembered in this context. The people of Gretna sure the hell wouldn't have let a bunch of little blue haired white ladies sit in that hell hole for three days with no food, water or sanitation. Lord knows Resident Bush would have sent in special forces to protect white women from crack gangsters rather that wandering around the country to eat cake, speechify and play his git-fiddle.
The Crescent City Connection Blockade of 2005 is a stain on this nation.
I think I've found the level of the room ...

He's one of the most powerful people in the history of the world. He has at his fingertips more money, more people, more equipment, more command & control than any man on the planet.

Fine. I'll stipulate that. Further, I'll stipulate that he is an incompetent poor little rich boy who never once made an honest living. Since he's never faced a real challenge, other than prying his face out of a beer stain, he has no idea how to snap to attention, and get to work like his life depended on it.

Letter to Boxer
I have friends in the Treme district of New Orleans, the oldest urban black neighborhood in the US. They did not deserve to be abandoned by FEMA and their president.
I want you to do four things for me:
1) Make sure the recovery and restoration of New Orleans are funded and managed in a humane manner.
2) Investigate why FEMA failed. Name names. I don't care if the Republican majority won't let you investigate. Screw em! Asking permission is not an option. Rent a hall at a hotel, and take testimony!
3) Bring the Guard Home. Now.
4) Impeach and convict Bush.
That will do for starters.
cheers,

Bush Fiddled While New Orleans Drowned
It was known Monday morning that a flood was in progress. That New Orleans was dying. And Bush sat on his lazy, pampered, spoiled, rich boy ass. I hope that people who voted for Bush realize that they put this country in the hands of a dangerous idot. This must be a proud moment for Republicans everywhere.
My Mom (a Republican and a Texan) replied to an email about Bush's response to this disaster by saying that he must be losing his mind. Ummm ... no. This is the same idiot who sat reading a book about a goat while our country was under attack. Same idiot, different disaster.

Crime and Punishment
After some pondering, I've finally determined an appropriate punishment for Bush. Impeachment is for lying, corruption and blowjobs. What we need is something with a little more impact. Something with a military influence, since failure as a commander in the face of grave danger is the crux of the matter.
I've got one word: keelhaul.
We need to have the ghost of Jean Lafite emerge on a corsair from the coastal bayous, sieze the preznit by the scruff of his neck, give the smirking moron a summary court marshall on deck, and keelhaul the heartless bastard over a hull crusted with 200 years of barnacles..
[Note: Ghost Pirates are imaginary entities and do not constitute an actual threat to any elected officials -- smirking fucktards or otherwise.]
I'm Speechless, But Steve Rants So I Don't Have To.

To Do List
- Once Mandy checks in, send her a large check to help with immediate expenses.
- Set aside vacation time to go to New Orleans, at the appropriate time, to help in person. I was thinking today that it would be nice to go there Thanksgiving week and fry up a bunch of turkeys. But who knows what NO is going to look like in three months.
- Advocate in whatever forms I can think of a) the return of the National Guard to the US and b) the impeachment of George W. Bush.

Bring home the guard. Now.
Worst
I actually engaged in a debate a couple of weeks ago about whether Bush is worse than Nixon. I can't believe how incredibly naive I was. How foolish and gullible I was. I took the "Nixon was worse" side of things.
I can't imagine Nixon, even in his deepest funk, sitting back and watching this unfold. He didn't care about poor black people who would never vote for him. He did care about his reputation as a man who got things done.
But Bush went to political rallies. And not just one. He had time to give a war speech. He had time to do one of those down-homey, aww shucks, goober-headed town hall events. Talkin' ta seniors about that ol' medicare. During the flood. While people died.
How could I be such an idiot? How could I have failed to plumb the depth of Bush's incompetence? What an idiot I was. "Nixon was worse"?
I can't stand the mendacity. I can't stand the incompetence. But to have both? That dog won't hunt.
Impeach the Goober.
