"This is another New Orleans thing, again made with Dieu Donne-- and it is a thought about the nature of water around that city -- It is surrounded by haunted waters-- Lake Ponchatrain , the mouth of the Mississippi Delta-- the series of canals, bayous, and other swamps; all of which combined into a brackish, oil-laden monster during Katrina-- I t is odd to think of water as the enemy ... it is the source of all life-- the thing that nutures all living things -- and at the same time devastatingly cruel. I know nature doesn't want or need or desire -- it just is ; but from time to time -- as a poetic indulgence-- I wonder if it is possible to ask of the water , an explanation..... I know this sounds odd ; but in New Orleans people don't curse the water , or the heat or God -- down there it is all the same thing. Native Americans give great spiritual weight to the water and the wind and the dirt-- to them there are no gods , and many spirits. As I said in the beginning of this-- I am not a believer -- I haven't a deity; I do not need more to fear. If I were to choose one though-- Nature and the water seem like vengeful enough entities to worship. I think of these birds as this atheist's prayer-- a statement bound to offend believers and non-believers alike; but bear with me -- this is a human hope."
