NOT LOUD ENOUGH!!!
After playing for almost an hour and a half, Gibby Haynes got mad at the sound guy who was on the side of the stage - something about not turning up the monitors. I don't know his name, but the sound guy was one of the Bowery Presents regulars. Gibby walked over and punched him and/or threw a bottle at him. Next thing you know security escorts Gibby off the stage mid-song. Nobody really knew what was going on. The band continued to play for at least one more song, and then left in a proper manner with lots of applause and high fives to the front row. Everyone started going crazy (in a good and drunken way), demanding an encore. It's not often you hear the crowd actually scream for a band to come back. We're all so spoiled. We just assume they always will. Of course there was the confusion about the way Gibby made his exit, and that was probably why people were chanting "Gibby" even louder and longer than usual.
that was genesis?

Trying to find the time to summarize from the message boards, Rashoman syndrome definitely in effect. The above set list is wrong. What we should have got at the end was X-Ray – Gary Floyd – Jimi – Cartoon – Shah. As far as I could tell (was dancing, not always watching the stage) Gibby was removed around the end of X-Ray, Paul said something like “we seem to have lost our singer” and then plowed through Gary Floyd taking the vocal himself. This was probably the highlight of the show, certainly the audience was whipped-up to its frothiest at that point and ready for more. Unfortunately they couldn’t tackle Jimi without Gibby (this is the first tour where the song was being performed in its entirety, the heavy, demonic first part and the acoustic birds and bowling second half) so Paul went straight into Shah Sleeps (always his vocal and traditional closer) then thanked the crowed saying something about “feeling the love.” He touched hands with the first row while exiting and that was it. Losing Jimi explains the missing 20 minutes; if they’d played it I think everyone would have called it a fine show.

That was the original set list for the tour and was widely published. A list from the recent New Hampshire show had the revised order which made sense in terms of what we saw.

UPDATE an alert reader found this message board post on the fracas, presumably from Paul Leary:

“The first thing I’d like to point out is that all these references to the “sound man” are actually references to the Webster Hall house stage monitor engineer, not our actual sound man. Our sound man Kevin has done an outstanding job. During sound check, there was a major problem with feedback in one (or both) of Gibby’s vocal microphones. Kevin had to come on stage after sound check and used an equalizer to correct the problem. After the show, he observed that his corrections had been bypassed for the show. If it feeds back on stage, there is no way to turn up vocals in the room. The monitor engineer did nothing to fix the feedback, his most important function for the job he was being paid to do.

This should have been a better show. Gibby was totally on top of his game. His wife was in the audience, and tons of friends. It must have been heartbreaking to have that guy s* on his performance and do nothing to fix it. Near the end of the set, during Gary Floyd, I looked over and see Gibby yelling at the guy, who responds by turning all stage monitors off completely. Gibby did not hit or bottle the guy. I heard the stage manager from across the hall thought that he had, and ordered him removed. We had another song or two to play before “Shah”, so we just went straight into that. Our set ends there anyway. I think the house lights didn’t come on, and the audience really stuck around for more. The kids SOR kids were evacuated. I went to the Beauty Bar and felt nothing but love.”

So, I guess my hunch about the staging was off mark. The bottle thing threw me off, as Gibby has been known to use movie prop bottles in fake fights before.
