indigo

synchronicity alert:

A few days ago I was reading about violet (to better understand how it differs from purple), which somehow turned to reading about indigo. Someone on the internet speculated (on a page I can't find anymore) that Newton used the term to describe a band on the spectrum because this band resembled an intermediate processing stage of natural indigo (not the final dye color), which is more violety than blue jeans.

The indigo we see most of the time now is a synthetic dye, so I'm not sure what natural indigo looks like in any form.

By the way, want to see indigo? According to the wiki ...

One can see spectral indigo by looking at the reflection of a fluorescent tube on the underside of a non-recorded compact disc. This occurs because the CD functions as a diffraction grating, and a fluorescent lamp generally has a peak at 435.833 nm (from mercury), as is visible on the fluorescent lamp spectrum.

Just tried it with a CD-RW and a DVD+R. There are too many overlapping spectra, so there's a mix of pure spectral colors and additive mixes. I need a prism.

it turns out that my fathers mothers side of the family were imported from the island menorca (spain) as slaves or indentured servants to work indigo plantations in florida aprox 1775-77. found this out at our last family reunion, schwarz-toberfest '04 in st augustine fl. so this is all of great interest. thanks!
