Ella and Joe

What a great link. I remember Joe Pass well. He played a lot of gigs for my dad back in the day. Remember, when I was a kid I used to sit in on sessions all the time, in the control room. I will NEVER forget one particular afternoon in the studio: picture a room full of the best session musicians in the business, taking a break, when Joe started playing Bye Bye Blackbird solo....... when he finished, you coulda heard a pin drop. Our great friend Joe Beck (one of the very best, ever) said, "Holy fuckin' shit! That's it, I quit!" and everybody laughed. I still get chills thinking about that one.
That sort of thing happened a lot... Often, when sessions would end, a bunch of musicians would jam for a little while, and sometimes a new project would be born :)

Another memory: my buddy Luke and I went to see Jaco play at The Blue Note one night (probably 1984), and sho' nuff, Jaco played Bye Bye Blackbird, solo, on that fretless bass of his. Talk about goose pimples................

Now, on the other hand, Joe Beck - he was one of the snarkiest, funniest, smartest people I've ever known.
God, I miss him! He designed the Alto Guitar, and was THE master of that style. He played for years with Ali Ryerson - check out a sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZPkv5gVqXY&feature=related
