watching some of the golf on today with tiger in contention. no sound though, its only saturday after all. and i saw something i dont recall ever seeing, the young guy currently in the lead was dragging on a cigarette while sizing up a chip shot before tossing it at his feet. didnt even bother to snuff it out. somewhere jack nicklaus (he designed the course) is grinding his teeth.

In my experience this is pretty standard on a golf course. You are smoking a cigarette as you walk up to your ball and set up. When it's no longer feasible to hold the cigarette in your hand or your mouth you toss it down on the ground, take your shot, and then pick up the still burning cigarette and go on your way. No reason to put it out as actually taking the shot only requires a few seconds of time.
