and hes an actual american not someone born and bred overseas. pretty impressive. interesting to see if he can eventually be a regular starter at dortmund in a couple of years. no american that i can recall has been a starter on a champions league level squad though dempsey may have one year at tottenham.

Only 15 American have played in the UEFA Champions League proper since its launch in 1992. Jovan Kirovski was the first American to play in the competition, making two appearances in Borussia Dortmund's run to the 1997 title. The farthest an American has gone in the Champions League is DaMarcus Beasley, who played for PSV in the 2005 semifinals. He leads all players with 22 appearances for PSV and Rangers.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Beasley joined IMG Academy, the United States Soccer Federation's Residency program in Bradenton, Florida. Before moving to Florida, Beasley played at South Side High School for two years. Beasley starred in the 1999 Under-17 World Cup in New Zealand, winning the Silver Ball as the tournament's second best player, behind teammate Landon Donovan who won the Golden Ball.

Bobby Wood finished Bundesliga season with 17 league goals for Union Berlin, setting a single-season record for a U.S. international in Germany. His performance led to a May 15 transfer to Hamburg SV in the German Bundesliga.
