Pretty sure they're real. A few years back the artist named Justin Ladda did the same thing with The Thing from the Fantastic 4, painted on walls on the back corner of a movie theatre, with fragments of it painted on the threatre seats. From one angle, and only one angle, everything lined up and you saw the Thing bounding over the seats comin' to clobber you.

This is done in advertising at motorsports events. A logo is painted (or chalked) so that from camera angle is looks "right". Extending the concept to multiple surfaces is tricky.
