anyone think this israeli offensive is good for bush politically (and neocon agenda) ? rice is publicly urging restraint. but is possible there was inside encouragement?

Just guessing, but I doubt there was encouragement. And I don't think it's good for Bush either. The Lebanese government has a real chance of falling, and those last elections were one of the neocons great victories. Maybe their only victory. What else can they point to? Libya?

It does seem like they are trying to use this as a way to further isolate Iran (and Syria,) and I guess some neocons probably think that getting into it with Iran will be good for Bush - but if they believe that they are seriously mistaken. Iran is kicking our ass and they will continue to kick our ass.

This is a complete disaster.

High speed missiles Iran purchased from China pose a real threat to US warships in the gulf. That would be very ugly. And if Iran takes out the Saudi oil infrastructure ... get used to walking.

The Israeli reaction looks like an atavistic impulse that accomplishes nothing but to strengthen the positions Hamas and Hezbollah hold in Palestine and Lebanon.

This is the one people are scared of: SS-N-22.

What would US response be to Iran sinking a ship? What if it's an aircraft carrier?

Nobody has any good moves. It is very scary.

Stratfor thinks it's good for the US.

--reminds me of the old joke Shecky Greene tells about how Frank Sinatra saved his life.

Seems that Shecky was being worked over in an alley by five goons when Frank looked over and said, "OK--he's had enough."
