allen expected to concede contest without recount. why not? on white house instructions?

CNN: "Republican George Allen of Virginia conceded the election for his U.S. Senate seat to Democratic challenger Jim Webb. After a tight race, Allen said: 'I don't wish to cause more rancor by protracted litigation that will not alter the result.'"

I don't get it either. Maybe Rove was so destroyed by the defeat that there is no one to lead the dirty tricks squad into action (and thus no one to tell Allen that the numbers don't matter and not to concede)?

Or maybe there really is no dirty tricks squad and I'm just paranoid?

Or is there some way that Allen won't be the one to pursue this, but that Republican led senate will do something themselves - so he's acting nice to score points, but he knows the R senators are planning to do something on his behalf?

Or maybe they are thinking that things are so bad now and only going to get worse (in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere) so it's actually okay to lose the midterm so that in the 08 race they can say "Well, the Democrats have been in charge for the last two years and look how much worse it has gotten!"

That last one is doubtful though since the Dems in charge of both houses is going to be a legal nightmare for a lot of Republicans inside the government and out.

I'm just really baffled they are not going to challenge it.

I read somewhere that VA election law is such that a change in outcome is not likely given the spread. I've also read that Allen really didn't want to be senator, he wanted to be Preznit. Whether or not he wins a recount, he's damaged goods. Time to start thinking 'bout being football commissioner.

maybe they just got whooped and they dont want to add injury to injury especially if they dont think they can win, which they obviously dont.

but also allen wants to maintain his electoral viability in virginia. if he challenges and loses he creates alot of bad will among the impatient electorate. warner aint no spring chicken either. and losing by 1/2 of 1% wont exactly hurt allens chances of getting renominated. plus, he can feed at the republican trough in the meantime. those lobbyist jobs pay pretty well im told.

it must have to do with scrapping a sinking ship and regrouping for a new '08 plan. allen can run for governor.
