Hate to keep defending Allen, since he is clearly a racist, but not only did he not know macaca was a "genus of monkey," it was clear from the context of the YouTube clip that he was contrasting Webb's inside the beltway elitism with the "real America" and the "real Virginia" and the jab at his cameraman was made in that context.

This is like Olbermann not admitting Kerry's botched joke was double-sided.

It's unedited punditorhea as opposed to bloggorhea.

not sure you can prove that tom. politicians including allen who regularly employ the dual meanings of words and phrases in speeches (in a pandering way) operate at the risk of being called out. you cant do the hokey-pokey for ever and get away with it. esp if you are a racist. (that is have a history of comfort with the "n" word.)

I just don't think Allen's that smart. When he said macaca he meant Makkhakha (a Simpsons-generic Arab name) and he had his script about Beltway elitism and worked the cameraman into it.
It was the "whatever your name is" and as Digby said, seeing the look on his face--the angry sneer, the violence behind the words--that gave him away as a racist. (Plus all the other stuff that subsequently came to light.)
