chris matthews got horsewhipped (sadly not literally) by jon stewart. sure to be making the rounds tomorrow.

Yeah, I saw that. Great stuff. I've been a little down on him lately, but he sure came through. Matthews is such an idiot. Reminded me of the glory days when Stewart went on that Tucker Carlson show (Crossfire?) and begged them to stop hurting America. He should stick to the passionate stuff and dump this idea about balancing attacks against both sides.

link to video.

the show can often seem like its on autopilot. i dont think its the balancing attacks thats at issue (i thought the recent montage of hillarys fake laughing was good) just the pulling of punches regardless of the political makeup of the guests. its when he falls back on "were just a comedy show" excuse when it just seems like sucking up to a guest.

"just a comedy show" - exactly. It almost seemed like he acquired so much political power that it freaked him out and he didn't want it any more.

On a barely related note: Will Colbert still be funny with a Democratic White House and Congress? He's so funny lately that I'm guessing yes, but it's a harder context for his shtick.

his alternative universe bit last night was particularly funny.

the conservative noise machine and the feckless democrats should keep him busy for awhile.

Yeah, that was a funny bit. Sort of a church of the subgenius thing when he came back with the pipe.

After seeing him lay into Matthews with little, if any, mercy, the softball interviews of William "other people's blood and guts" Kristol are that much more awful. Stewart is willing to throw a couple of jabs at Kristol, but 'pulling punches" is the perfect metaphor.

from the chris matthews dept. of rationalizations and belittlements comes this exchange:

KLEIN: Thompson is running on the fact that he‘s a very tall man.

MATTHEWS: Who did that?

KLEIN: Thompson did. I think it‘s his campaign platform. He‘s not only male, but over six feet tall.

MATTHEWS: Did he bring that up?

KLEIN: Everything you see about Thompson says he‘s huge.

MATTHEWS: Tall.

KLEIN: He‘s tall. He‘s big. He‘s manly. The guy‘s running—

(CROSS TALK)

MATTHEWS: I think that was my problem with John Stewart the other night, by the way. That‘s just a hunch. What do you think?
