gov Schweitzer (mt)

i like schweitzer but i dont see it. not an obama booster. small insignificant state although could be helpful in upper mid-west. more of an edwards-type populist. is outside the beltway but maybe too far. bolo tie-wearer. looks too much like tim russert.

Interesting. I don't know much about Schweitzer but the part about "his focus on converting Montana's vast coal reserves into fuel" makes me nervous. Obama's backing of Bush's horrible 2005 energy bill - because it benefitted coal interests in Illinois - is one of his biggest voting record weaknesses. (WaPo story.) He's since backed off, but he really wants to stay away from anything to do with coal.

On the other hand, I like how he floated the idea of bringing home Montana National Guard units during the big 2005 forest fires. That's the sort of practical anti-war position that can play well and is a good match with Obama. The Dems have to run anti-war, obviously, but they can't seem like they are doing it because they don't like war (what are you some kind of hippie?) It has to be more like: we did our job, we won, and now we need the troops out so they can do other important missions.

I've got no ideas of my own for VP, but I'm with Dave on the please god, no. That guy doesn't need an even bigger stage for his unstoppable powers of bloviation. Still, I think he would make a decent attack dog against McCain, especially on foreign policy matters. The same deluded talking heads that think McCain is an honorable straight talker also think Biden is very very serious on foreign policy. I think there will be pressure to select him to add gravitas to the ticket.

Biden's dapper. There, I said something positive.

its hard to run on change with a guy like biden on the ticket. dodd is a little better plus hes a long standing member of the foreign relations committee too and has the favor of the netroots for his committed stand on fisa. not an inspirational figure but plenty of that gravitasity. webb would be great too. no bs military backround former reaganite catholic from a swing state. wasnt too happy with his fisa vote though.
