I hate Dowd. What she does as a columnist takes no brains. Be snide, push buttons. Usually it's making fun of a middle aged politician's combover or socks riding too low on his calf when he crosses his legs (she actually talked about that once). Now she's stoking the race thing. The way she calls Barack "Barry" all the time is just as belittling.
On the subject of race, I participated in a discussion on Paddy Johnson's blog about that pre-election New Yorker cover (the one with the egregious stereotypes for the Obamas). I thought it wasn't a good idea to be injecting those images from the center/left/whatever into the discussion when the nation is still full of people resembling antagonists in a Sidney Poitier movie. Many commenters felt free speech (David Remnick's right to make an urbane joke) trumped those considerations.
I hate Dowd, too. But I do believe there's a racist element to the tea baggers. It's good to have someone saying so, even if it's Dowd.
