Big and Shitty is the American Success Story

Man I am not happy about this. TWC has been pretty good for me (yeah, it could be faster and/or cheaper, but it works okay and almost no down time.) I don't see how getting bigger is going to benefit the consumer at all. But I guess that's not really the point of such deals. They cite competition from Google fibre as a reason why they need to merge! GF is in two markets: Kansas City and Austin! Oh noes!

Here's BGR with three reasons the deal might not go through. Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

During a conference call with the press on Thursday, one reporter asked Comcast executive David Cohen whether his company’s proposed merger with Time Warner Cable would lead to some relief for customers who are tired of seeing their monthly bills keep going upward. Cohen’s response was refreshingly honest but also a depressing reminder of just how broken the market for home broadband services is in the United States.

“The impact on customer bills is always hard to quantify,” Cohen said. “We’re certainly not promising that customer bills are going to go down or even increase less rapidly.”

Every year or so they just tack 2 dollars on to the bill, without warning or explanation. Last time I complained and said I would report the unannounced bump to the state's utilities commission. A couple days later, I got a call from a "suit" saying they'd give me a reduced rate for a few months. They did, and now it's starting the gradual uphill slide again.
