i think you mean fetterman. not sure what the politics of the phillies is. but i did just read something about the donora smog if you want to burnish your pittsburgh bona fides. even has a baseball tie-in.

I’ve contributed to Fetter-man twice. You might consider the same Skinzo. And the governor’s race too. The consequences of non participation are dire.

Still smarting from the playoffs, but dislike the Astros enough to overcome my childhood American League favoritism and root for the Phillies, even though I don't like them much either. I might root for Fetterman, but the contributions he needs are to his health fund.

they werent an american league team during your childhood. didnt even exist for some of it.

My dad’s chain of loyalty was that since the Tigers were in the American League, you should root for the AL in the series. This may have something to do with why I am more attached to the Yankees than the Mets, even though there are more reasons to dislike the Yankees. Unlike some native NY fans, I am able to root for both, and did enjoy '86, including attending game 7.

thats pretty much how it was for me. the american league seemed alien. the home plate umpire had the shield instead of body armor and i loathed the yankees. had a soft spot for the red sox. i probably rooted for them over the reds. i pretty much rooted against everyone. 79 pirates were rootable. never liked the phillies. dodgers i could get behind. giants, maybe. never like the cardinals though i liked some of their players. could root for an underdog like the royals. did not like the braves. i dont even know when the designated hitter finally came to the nl. thats how indifferent ive been. such a fucked world that political coverage amounts to faux paxs and who can raise more money. needed to end on a political note.

Oh it’s fucked. We are fucked.

I have never really understood why someone would prefer on team over the other. The players are traded around, the teams often move from one city to another. It seems that the only thing sort of consistent would be the names, uniforms and logos which also get changed.

im sure it boils down to tribalism and a sense of belonging just like any other group dynamics. you often are born into a sect. you have familial bonding and friendships created over shared interest, connections are built as are petty hatreds. then you are just emotionally involved. winning makes you feel good and losing the reverse. sure there are drug corollaries. narratives are constructed, heroes and villains forged. its pretty elemental. and like the rest of human behavior it can be abused and becomes another excuse to treat "the other" like shit or used as a proxy for all the other hatred roiling in mens souls just as religion or nationalism warp or are tools of oppression. it is often said you are rooting for laundry as you suggest but that seems like an oversimplification though ultimately it is just bread and circuses, or hot dogs and ballgames.

I enjoy watching sports but I'm too lazy or confused to keep up with them. As a kid I loved the Portland Mavericks and the Oakland A's who I saw a couple of times in their heyday. The Mavericks moved on or collapsed and I didn't keep up with the A's, I'm sure they were sad to lose me as a fan. Later I decided that I preferred the National League because I thought the designated hitter is bullshit but I didn't have a favorite team, mostly because I didn't know which teams played in which leagues, other than the Mets, so I guess they were my favorite. As of this year, both leagues suck. But I do like watching games with someone who is patient enough to explain what's going on (nobody) and I do hate the Yankees.

It's the metaphorization of metonymy: apparent meaning imbued by the mere fact of contiguity. Or as the song puts it, root, root, root for the home team; if they don't win it's a shame.
