Mike Leigh Began his career directing films for the BBC in the early70's. He is best known in the US for his film Naked. One of my favorites from him is 1983's Meantime It features Tim Roth with Gary Oldman in a supporting role. It stars Phil Daniels, who, despite having also starred in Quadraphenia has remained relatively unknown. Other than one of the voices on Chicken Run, Mr. Daniels doesn't seem to have done much since. This is unfortunate because he clearly has the talant to be a great actor. (shame on the promo company, the new posters and vid packaging feature Roth and Oldman only) Here in NYC Evergreen Video and Kim's Video (sorry, no link) are good sources for Leigh's work.

i was random bloghopping when i happen to hit upon this one referencing alot of the movies mentioned lately. and with a link to freaky peter pan, i just thought it was worth a fink. although anyone that thinks 1941 was a great movie....i think i read recently that the anniversary of belushis just passed. he was 33 at the time in 1982. i also checked out some band i never heard of bs2000 on grand royal. the one song i listened to was wacky. very hipster doofus music. but fun.

love his films, especially the early ones - i saw nuts in may again recently and grown ups is another great one. i will have to check out meantime. as for his recent work, i was not too fond of topsy turvey - very much liked career girls, which i don't rememebr getting as much press as secrets and lies and naked (excellent).

  • I didn't see Topsy Turvy either but have a DVD copy, no player though. I liked Career Girls too. I think his later stuff seems more Manneristic than the pure realism of his earlier work, I kind of like this direction.
