Drive-ins maybe.

i guess drive-ins is correct as well as grindhouse theaters in major metropolitan areas were the primary purveyors. also, there was the creation of midnight movies in more traditional venues along with the movies being "presented as special events by traveling roadshow promoters ." and lastly, perhaps, the blanket saturation of releases we see now (which itself may have been a marketing ploy cribbed from early 70s horror movies) allowed for some of the tamer fare (?) early on to be packaged as b-movie double features. i can only imagine that as tv eroded the moviegoing numbers that there were theaters eager for whatever might turn a profit.
