i had never heard of thief, the directorial debut from michael mann, but the maker of the movie drive certainly had. ive never been a huge fan of mann but his style is undeniable. to be honest i didnt make it past the midway point of the movie but that had more to do with my discomfort sitting on the couch than a dislike of the content.

I remember liking it when it came out.

Thief is good -- "men working while Tangerine Dream pulses on the soundtrack" owes a lot to Friedkin's Sorceror (which I finally got to see on the big screen -- Film Forum a few months ago). In fact, a lot of Thief and Mann can be seen in Sorceror.

  • rififi was clearly an influence as well although maybe all modern heist films can claim that as a founding document.

manns manhunter has been on this month and despite its familiar terrain it hasnt drawn me in.

  • Thanks re: Riffifi -- will look for it.
I went on a Jean-Pierre Melville binge a while back.
I saw Manhunter in the theatre in the 80s -- pretty distinctively strange at the time. Arty -- but I kind of liked that about it.
