Los Angeles plays itself

Saw this on Netflix last night. Stunning study of geographic self reference. living in NYC you get the idea of continuous set location, but of itself. Los Angeles is a location of both itself and everywhere else. This is a must see.

ill check it out. the movie site i use has a list of every movie mentioned in the documentary.

i dont know how much la is an "everywhere else" as it used to be unless you are referring primarily to whats produced on fabricated studio lots since hollywood has outsourced production of nameless cityscapes to places like vancouver and toronto and americana to north carolina, for one. that and the vast array of location shooting in new york and elsewhere surely has diminished its ubiquity.

In studios, lots and buildings all across town, the doc resides in the join of cinema and civic history and it's exhaustive in a good way. You get the impression that the author has spent a lifetime preparing for it. It's broken into chapters.

  • The Valley is everywhere and nowhere in media.

a girl after your own heart. i like molly lambert and not just because she will occasionally favorite one of my tweets. she did a nice job with their mad men recaps last year. unfortunately she ends up writing all too often about the culture surrounding pop music stardom most of which holds little interest for me.

only tangentially related, i have this ebook if interested.
