goldie hawn day on tcm. i missed her early wide-eyed 60s-infused avatar of free love roles like theres a girl in my soup instead coming in at her slightly more mature wide-eyed late 70s rom-com stage in movies like foul play or private benjamin. seems like old times, again paired with chevy chase, is on at six. i suspect it hasnt aged well, and it was never that good, but it was pleasantly not bad for an early 80s "whats on hbo for the 100th time" offering.

watched parts of cactus flower for the first time. think that was hawns breakout role outside of laugh-in. she got nominated for a best supporting role but if she wasnt the star then i dont know who was.  have to admit i found it somewhat confusing as to what the characters actually felt for each other though i wasnt completely paying attention. seemed like hawn was always trying to get matthau and bergman "back together" while she was his unlikely fiance, but seemed somewhat hurt when it came to fruition. one thing i found interesting is that matthau ends up with ingrid bergman who in reality was five years older than matthau, which seems rare for a hollywood picture, except that she was once one of the most beautiful women in cinema and he was walter matthau.

I first knew her from Laugh In. The first movie I remember seeing her in was Butterflies Are Free.  I loved the movie at age 11,  pretty sure I'd find it unbearable now. The theme song was catchy, I still remember the chorus.

  • i watched the first bit of it this afternoon having never seen it. still a heavy dose of "isnt she a free spirit" but there was a little gravity to the dialogue. the mother won an academy award for supporting actress but she hasnt descended full force on the proceedings yet. thats how i stumbled on the mia farrow info. the lead is eddie alberts (from green acres) son who went on to a relatively undistinguished career in tv movies and nighttime soaps like falcon crest.
