The Sight and Sound poll is now a major bellwether of critical opinion on cinema and this year’s edition (its eighth) is the largest ever, with 1,639 participating critics, programmers, curators, archivists and academics each submitting their top ten ballot. What has risen up the ranks? What has fallen? Has 2012’s winner Vertigo held on to its title? Find out below.

obviously #1 is a little controversial as it is a little seen movie by a not very well known female director but movies get reappraised and reflect current trends if not tastes. honestly ive never seen it.  heres a cahiers list from 2007 for comparison.

The link is bad, but easy to find via Google. I must admit I haven't seen it either. Not entirely clear on the voting system; were the lists ranked? Is it just a matter of total number of appearances? How many would actually say it's the best film ever made? These lists are fun, as well as ludicrous in their way. Meshes of the Afternoon next to The Searchers? There's a double bill for you. Just to be provocative (and show off my knowledge) I use to tell people my favorite film was Edison's Electrocuting an Elephant. There may be a bit of that going on here.

i didnt look it up but read in a thread mostly filled with derision that the 1600 person voting body just submitted a list of 10 movies in no particular order. so it is an aggregate award. it was suggested it ranked so high as it became the go to "lets throw in a movie by a female director" among our nominees. i think in the previous iteration it ranked somewhere in the 30s which is still notable.
