APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX
NY Post
Expanded, cleaned-up version of hallucinatory 1979 masterpiece. Running time: 196 minutes. Rated R (violence, female nudity). At the Astor Plaza and the Lincoln Square. This version of the 1979 masterpiece has been re-edited by director and co-writer Francis Ford Coppola and co-editor Walter Murch to include nearly 50 minutes of footage left out of the original release.

  • Eat a good meal, be rested, don't drink too many liquids: It's long but it's good. The restored scenes have a lot of weird, '70s humor, notably Lance's and Chef's surrealistic romp with two shellshocked Playboy bunnies. I wonder if we'll have to wait 22 years to see what The Thin Red Line was really like?

The critics are pretty divided about it. Matt Zoller Seitz raves in the New York Press, and Jim Hoberman in the Voice still condemns the last 40 minutes but doesn't pan the new version. David Edelstein in Slate excoriates it so eloquently he makes me question my own limited thumb-up: "The restored footage, nearly an hour of it, has at once bloated and diluted the work we've known and half-loved, undercutting its still-astonishing strengths while making its flaws leap out with unprecedented clarity."
