The Outfit is based on the "Parker" novel of the same name by Richard Stark, aka Donald Westlake. The film version is good, especially the first half, but I don't know if I'd put it on a list. I saw Smile and The American Friend at the theatre during their first runs -- both were essential films for me back in the day.

There's a funny bit in Smile where the beauty pageant contestants are coached to use the phrase "helping others" somewhere in their presentations. One contestant says she plays the flute and the judges won't give her any points until she explains how it helps others.
