    • Jerry at Confession:
Jerry: ... I wanted to talk to you about Dr. Whatley. I have a suspicion that he's converted to Judaism just for the jokes.

Father: And this offends you as a Jewish person.

Jerry: No, it offends me as a comedian. And it'll interest you that he's also telling Catholic jokes.

i saw a variant of that joke on scooby doo when i was seven. wasnt funny then either. maybe it got a chuckle in 1885.

i dont know which one your talking about - the "two guys" link goes to a bunch of chelm jokes. the "not to talk about it on shabbat, but..." one is very good. suspect there are others in the 5 page read.

it was the one about cutting down trees. the "schlemiel" link is interesting. i wonder how "schlemihls and schlimazls" ended up in the laverne and shirley themesong. heres the themesong writers body of work. he wrote the love boat theme too. hes the unheralded genius of 70s schmaltz.

surely hired by laverne's older brother bronx jew and executive producer gary marshal. penny and rob reiner were item at the time. you knew that, but maybe jim b didnt. btw, lenny and squiggy were all i could take from that show. which gave onto very worthwhile "lenny and the squigtones." i dont know what happened to squiggy but lenny went on to a successful film career.

i was aware of the gary marshall angle as well. i liked his portrayal of a tv exec on murphy brown too. i would also say that without christopher guest it would be hard to call michael mckeons film career a success but....(i love that his imdb picture is david st. hubbins.) two imdb tidbits on squiggy,

Baseball fanatic and student of the game, he helped the young Bill James with his first Baseball Abstract in 1977.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in May 1984, but kept his illness a secret from the public for 15 years.

"The first time I met Pete Rose, he said, 'Hey Squiggy, got any greenies?' " Lander remembered. "I thought, 'How can he be so casual about that? He doesn't know I'm not going to say anything.' But that's what he asked me.

"Schlemiel, schlimazel, hasenpfeffer incorporated!"

"Hassenpfeffer, as any Bugs Bunny fan knows, is rabbit stew." (or schlemiel's soup)
