roddick broke straight back the next game. and coach connors took off the v-neck sweater so you know things are getting tense.

roddick took it 6-2 in the final set. serena williams who is unseeded having not played most of the year just beat some young serbian who looked like she might become a top player. ivanovic. cant remember her first name.

now there are supposedly three matches tonight on usa network. hard to believe theyll get them all in. first up is sharapova. next american james blake then late night with federer. my elbow is aching just thinking about it.

another fool day of tennis. thank god i dont have to go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. and just to make things interesting out at the usta billie jean king national tennis center, the mets are returning to shea for the remainder of the week. add to that the new stadium under construction in the parking lot and you have a traffic snarl worthy of new york.

todays marquee matchup will be amelie mauresmo currently #1 versus a resurgent serena williams. that kicks off usa networks evening coverage. in late afternoon action on cbs roddick looks to knock off the guy that beat agassi yesterday. also #2 rafael nadal and #4 maria sharapova have matches during the day along with a brother and sister, former us open champion marat safin and #12 dinara safina. among the seeded women (top 32) nearly a third are russian born. us tennis is generally moribund although #5 james blake played well last night.

supersaturday, bitches!!

the mens semifinals are just about to get underway. federer is up first against some russian roadkill and then roddick takes on the wildcard (another russian, i think) who took out rafael "abu" nadal. then, tonight, the womens final. cbs is very happy that tennis barbie beat the poster girl for out magazine. she will face the belgian pixie who has reached the finals of all four majors this year, winning at the french and wimbledon. i think she lost the other by bowing out during the australian open because of injury. no mention as to whether stingrays were in anyway involved.

federer eviscerated his opponent. roddick traded breaks -- is on serve 6-5 in the first set.

sharapova beat henin-hardenne for the womens title pocketing $1.2 million plus a half million bonus for god knows what. add that to the $20 million plus she made from two weeks of endorsement responsibilities this year and youd have to say that shes sitting pretty along with feeling pretty.

mens final is at 4:30 today. roddick outlasted his opponent yesterday by outserving him. federer will prove to be much more formidable. cant see roddick pulling it out but federer has shown his humanity on a few occasions this tournament so anything is possible. federer is going for his 9th slam victory. sampras holds the mens record at 14.

and martina navratilova put one more slam title on her resume before retiring at age 49. it was her 59th .
