sugarland (great flic and {spoiler} amazing epic cop car pursuit scene near ending) is strangely similar to badlands.

seems like the anti-hero road movie, whether its a couple or a loner, was a popular theme in the late sixties and early seventies. i dont know if bonnie and clyde was the beginning of that or just the early highwater mark of its kind. hollywood, of course, ditched its anti-heroes after awhile for the most part (vague generalization) but the car pursuit pyrotechnics have become ever more lavish in the blockbuster era.

on tcm they said spielberg wasnt thrilled with the somewhat dour ending of sugarland but the producers thought otherwise. the box office bore his views out.

id say sugarland had a little more in common with the getaway than badlands. the tone is a little lighter, and its more action oriented. i have to watch badlands again though. i have it on dvd.

just flicked on 1941. tcm said spielberg limited himself to special effects available to filmmakers in the early 40s. gotta give him credit for ingenuity, and cheekiness as the opening scene echoes jaws but instead of a shark attack its a japanese sub.

pretty sure it doesnt happen but would have loved to see a scene between toshiro mifune and john belushi. samurai seven meets samurai tailor...
