i was just about to complain about that. who thinks thats a good idea? i know the networks dont like it for obvious reasons. past time for that to be banned.

dont have a sense how accurately this represents the quality of the national squads but here are the fifa rankings going in to the world cup

I'm happy with Italy or Brazil taking it. (because either way, there will be a great party in my neighbourhood.)

mmm, its hard not to like brazil but ive never liked the italians much. still, rather see someone else take it. maybe spain or argentina. have to see as it goes on who catches my fancy. usually root for whichever team is less prone to flopping and histrionics and thats not named germany.

I like Argentina's colors

my god. im slightly behind watching on tivo but england just got robbed of an unquestionable goal because the ref did not see that the ball was past the goal line. theres just no excuse for fifa not to have instant replay for that. its just absurd to cling to antiquated notions when technology has made them obsolete.
- dave 6-27-2010 3:59 pm [add a comment]

i like the fact they don't use instant replay. antiquated notions? it's a ball game and the game should be decided by the people on the field. crazy to me to have to go to instant replay every 10 minutes. not sure how far you've gotten caught up, but more egregious to me is what happened to ghana today.
- linda 7-03-2010 2:07 am [add a comment]

what happened to ghana? their player blew it at the end of regulation?

the goalline instant replay would rarely come into play. goals are so few and far between that one fuckup can really make a difference.

flopping still is the most irksome element. id be inclined to step on someone with my cletes like the brazilian did if someone continually fell down and writhed around like a bitch. which is not to say the brazilians dont have their share of practitioners.
- dave 7-03-2010 3:16 am [add a comment]

no, suarez using both hands to block a ball that would certainly have been a goal in last second. that goal would have been the game. he doesn't get to play again but his foul saved his team. doesn't that encourage fouling?

and i think they all have careers in hollywood when they retire. they have the looks and flair for drama.

unfortunately i will be at a fourth of july parade this morning so will miss game, dammit.

theres no excuse for missing argentina v. germany. you have tivo tho, no?

since i wrote that ive read some about the games yesterday and there is a debate about the fairness of the handball penalty. i guess i wouldnt be opposed to awarding the team a goal if its clear that a handball prevented an obvious goal though it does remove that dramatic penalty kick which they will make nine times out of ten.

for whatever reason i find that act far less egregious than the flopping or even the constant grabbing in an effort to impede progress. probably since i didnt like it when it happened to me but also because its inadequately punished. whereas a handball like that almost always is properly remedied. also it is largely unpremeditated. but its true that the risk/reward certainly favors the offending squad. all they have to lose is that player for one game so, like i said, i would not be averse to a rule change. the only other downside is is that it gives the referees another opportunity to make the wrong call.

according to something i read, it was part of the netherlands gameplan to flop to unnerve the brazilians, and also as payback because some of the brazilians are floppers themselves. really bad for the game that it has devolved to that point. that the powers that be arent making a concerted effort to stamp it out does not speak well for them. just seems like another idiotic corporation unwilling to admit that its broken so long as the revenue stream is consistent.

Well I got stuck in traffic this morning to nj, and missed the group departure for main street parade. Guess I just wait here for everyone to come home and watch game. Who says traffic sucks?

I hear ya. I missed most of early games. Do they asian teams play the same way?
- linda 7-03-2010 3:39 pm [add a comment]

thats a good question. id imagine the top players that play in europe might well become infected with that mentality. the african players certainly do.

argentinas constant unwarranted whining is accomplishing the very improbable, me rooting for germany.
- dave 7-03-2010 4:11 pm [add a comment]

interesting that penalty kicks were originally instituted specifically because of the handball goal line infraction.

"The early origin of the penalty kick probably lies in Rugby football, as shown in early match reports, for example in 1888: "Dewsbury was awarded a penalty kick in front of the goal"[2] The concept of a penalty goal for fouls within 2 yards (1.8 m) of the goal was suggested at a Sheffield FA meeting in 1879.[3] The invention of the penalty kick is also credited to the goalkeeper and businessman William McCrum in 1890 in Milford, County Armagh, Northern Ireland[4]. The Irish Football Association presented the idea to the International Football Association Board and finally after much debate, and after a blatant goal-line handball by a Notts County player in the FA Cup Quarter-Final against Stoke the board approved the idea on 2 June 1891.[5] A similar incident in Scotland in a match between Airdrieonians and Heart of Midlothian also contributed to the call for the penalty kick,[6] which came into effect in the 1891-92 season. The first ever penalty kick was awarded to Wolverhampton Wanderers in their game against Accrington at Molineux Stadium on 14 September 1891. The penalty was taken and scored by John Heath[7] as Wolves went on to win the game 5-0."

i also read elsewhere that the likelihood of scoring on a penalty kick was about 75%. so ultimately it does encourage taking the handball.

im not overly familiar with south african history but it seems like it would be a cruel twist if the netherlands won their first cup there.

true. at the end i was hoping a little that uruguay would tie it up. forlan is not too hard to look at. and that one announcer was really a doofus today. first he was fascinated that team uruguay still believed in themselves (when it was tied 1-1), and then wondered why players couldn't kick equally well with both feet. where do they get these chaps?

Intersting article. Who are people rooting for?
- jim 7-11-2010 4:48 am [add a comment]

spain... the pass pass pass can get tedious but its expert and effective. plus ive come to loathe robben of the netherlands for his egregioius flopping. i wish the petulant brazilian had stomped on him harder. dont know if torres will start for spain but it would be nice to see him wake up from whatever dream he's been in while floating through the tournament.

might be the worst flop of the world cup. fu italy.
