damn, another version of the bridge. the american one was adapted from a danish show. this is an english adaptation set on the "border" between britain and france. have no idea if its any good. just ran across it by happenstance. first episode aired tonight i think.

the showrunner of the american version appeared on a grantland podcast a couple of weeks ago and was pretty forthcoming about what the show was and what he wanted it to be. ultimately he felt hamstrung by the central storyline of the original version but hoped in a second season now that that is resolved he can focus on the more interesting interpersonal dynamics and that of the tex-mex border. heres the podcast if anyone is interested.

i watched it. pretty much hews to the same template as the us version though perhaps more so to the original which i havent seen. but the starkness of the southwest landscape and the cultural divide between texas and mexico to my mind make the american iteration more poignant. also the characters around the periphery are more sharply drawn. the actors populating this one seem culled from any procedural where in the us they are uniquely odd. and, i hate to say it, but the aspergeriness of the lead female detective is downplayed to a degree which while i had my misgivings about it gave the character some genuine depth.

I was surprised at how much I liked the American version (loved the Danish one).
