Some of my earliest and fondest tv recollections involve Dobie Gillis. Dobie was a college student who worked part time at his dads grocery store. He had a girlfriend Gilda and a Beatnic friend Maynard G. Krebbs (pre Gilligans Island Bob Denver). It opened with a thoughtful statement and an image of Rodan's The Thinker. It seemed quite worldly and progressivly youth oriented. More episodes can be found on YT. I don't recall this going into reruns or just briefly after the initial run.

I remember seeing re-runs of it but don't remember much other than Bob Denver wore a goatee and his character was modled after a beatnick.

i have the vaguest recollection of seeing it (once or twice) in reruns later on nick at nite. late 80s, early 90s.

lets see. dobie started out in high school for the first season and a half before joining the army for the remainder of season two before entering college for the final two seasons.

first season foils include tuesday weld and warren beatty.

only thinking rodan did was how to defeat godzilla. the sculptor was rodin.

and, of course, strike one and two on beatnik.

rerun seems to be the operative term bur re-run has some legs. i was inclined in that direction.

interesting (?) that dobies hair got darker as the show went on. wonder what the thinking was behind the change. maybe it signaled a maturation or it was just a pain to bleach it.

ask and ye shall recede

Hickman was so associated with his previous character that production required him to bleach his brown hair blond—a decision that was reversed for seasons two, three, and four, after the bleaching treatment started taking chunks out of Hickman’s hairline.

  • Incorrect spelling counts as a strike?

  • if incorrect spellings were strikes then id have to include krebs, progressively and modeled. only misspellings of beatnik were strikes.

Maynard played bongo drums and wore a sweatshirt with the arms cut off and inside out? Recurring gag was; “Work!?”

just saw a picture of yvonne craig and wondered what else she had done besides batgirl. turns out she was on dobie gillis six times playing six different characters. i wonder if this was an injoke or they just kept going to the same well. this person has some "theories."

She was also in the Elvis movie It Happened At The World's Fair. Lousy movie but she makes it worth watching.
