well, i think the evangelicals make up close to 25% of the population. i dont know what % of them are wingnuts, however. now nearly 20% of us identify as god-challenged or godless. so i wouldnt give up hope quite yet. interesting that our founding myth is built on religious tolerance, or, at least it would be interesting to know when that myth blossomed into accepted truth. i guess the constitution has alot to do with that. of course, the christian extremists have created a counter myth that this country was created as a christian country. tolerance really was never on the agenda, just what form intolerance would take. we should be thankful that so many of our prominent founding fathers did not have much use for religion or that counter myth might be a lot closer to the truth.
