So far I've missed the tribute in light. Two nights ago I looked, around 9:30, and couldn't see a thing. I have a perfect view of the area from my window (assuming the lights are right where the WTC towers stood.) People assured me they were on at that time. So I'm underwhelmed, to say the least. Didn't even think to look last night. Ho hum.

i saw them on the way home from alias once i hit delancey and essex. kind of cool. i think the shade of blue is nice and subtle. im almost glad to be underwhelmed. maybe you need to get a little closer for optimal whelming.

I think it was too clear the first night. Yesterday I could see them dimly from Brooklyn, but I didn't actually go up on the bridge for a better view. Tonight should be foggy; maybe they'll be bright enough that they have to turn it off. I think that's the measure of success.
Oh yeah, the name is being changed to "Piles of Light".

check this out - not sure if it's been digitally enhanced. but i could see the lights on the first night from my window on avenue c.

maybe as a temporary memorial they should have "rebuilt" the towers on a giant lightbrite.

We can't get into your mailbox - we just see a sign in page.

Is it this one?
- jim 3-13-2002 11:51 pm

nope that's not it. is there a better way to post a jpg?
i had opened the image up from my webmail and just posted that page...

If the image is somewhere on your computer (if not, open it up in your webmail again and drag it to your desktop) then click [upload] from the front page here (or from the bottom of any page.) On the upload page click on 'browse', find the file on your system using the dialogue box that pops up, give the picture a short description in the space provided, and then click 'upload'. Depending on the picture size this could take a few moments. When it is uploaded to the server you'll get a page telling you the upload is complete and showing you the HTML you need to put the picture on a page. Just cut and paste the HTML into a post.

The first night I heard the >click< as they hit the switch on tv (\/) and then the beams slowly shot up into the sky terminating at the high cloud ceiling, nice. Last night the clouds were so low there was no effect at all.

About half the images I get by email have to be opened in an imaging program (e.g., HotShots, PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop) then saved as jpegs in order to even be viewed. That may be the case here.

Oh right. Maybe it's one of those .max files. Fucking proprietary formats. Yuck.
- jim 3-14-2002 7:19 pm

Rion.nu has some photos.
- jim 3-14-2002 7:26 pm

hmm. that didn't seem to work. i guess it a gif and not a jpg.
- julie 3-14-2002 8:36 pm

Strange. That little disk icon is actually the image that was uploaded. It doesn't matter if it's a .gif or a .jpg (although you should have the appropriate ending on the filename.) I wonder if the image is not really on your machine? (I mean you are seeing it on your machine, but it's being loaded off your mail server.)

this looks like the design site
- dave 3-14-2002 10:43 pm

I think it's pretty darn cute posted in the comment like that, I saved a copy.
I have a collection of small icons, some of them animated gifs. I've been toying with the idea of posting the collection to my page but then I'm afraid I'd be obligated to add to it regularly (yeah right)

We got a better look last night, and the display is more or less effective. The beams tend to blend into a single column, not necessarily reading as an image of the missing buildings. The impression is more of projection, which may be read as an abstract evocation of human yearning. That makes a better memorial than the literal-minded would have provided, but I also can't help thinking of searchlights shining from prison walls, seeking escaped prisoners…
- alex 3-15-2002 5:25 pm

yeah that's it - it's loading off the server at my office
