Adobe launches Apollo. I mentioned this in passing back in November, and now here it is. Nicely done Adobe. Apollo lets developers write cross platform applications using HTML, javascript, and Flash, that run on the desktop instead of in the browser. This has the potential to unlock a lot of creativity. I'm downloading the SDK now and will report back when I get a chance to play around with it. For now I am guardedly optimistic on this one. And six months ago I was thinking Adobe couldn't do anything right.

Apollo vs. Firefox 3?

Some consider Microsoft’s WPF/e platform the main competitor to Apollo, because it promises rich cross-platform applications, just like WPF/e. However, I wonder if the real competitor to Apollo is the web browser, specifically Firefox. Richard MacManus of Read/Write Web reported last month that Firefox 3 will include support for offline web applications.
I don't really care how we get there, I just want to build things that function like web apps but can access (large amounts of) local storage.

Even better - Adobe releases Flex under the Mozilla open source license. They are really making all the right moves. I think Adobe may well win in the rich internet application (RIA) space and become the defacto environment for this type of thing. Who'd have thought? There was so much ill will concerning Flash by web geeks not so long ago, but they've been steadily turning that around while making their tools better and better.
