Wow. Hype is a key frame based animation creation program that outputs pure HTML5 and javascript. My mind is blown. Check out the gallery of examples.

Mac's answer to Flash?
- mb 5-28-2011 1:33 pm

Yes and no, but mostly no.

First a little clarification. Hype is a Mac application, that is, it runs only on Mac OS X. But the animation files you produce with Hype are pure HTML files containing HTML, CSS, and javascript. These files can be uploaded to any web server (running on any OS - Linux, Windows, OS X, etc...) and can be viewed by any modern web browser. So the Mac only part is just on the authoring side; the resulting file is universally playable in modern web browsers without any plug-ins. (But, yes, of course "modern web browser" means that only the latest round of browsers that support at least some HTML5 and CSS3 qualify, but Hype looks like it does a good job of degrading gracefully in lesser browsers.)

Hype is an answer to Flash only for very simple uses of Flash. Hype can produce simple animations and that's about it. Flash can do very powerful sophisticated things. But, more often than not, Flash is used to do this sort of very simple thing. In those cases I think it is a win for the world to replace Flash content with Hype created content. It's certainly a huge win for developers who want to create this sort of animation and target both the desktop and mobile devices with the same code (since all iOS devices and many other mobile devices don't support Flash.)

For more sophisticated uses of Flash (video games, controlling web cams, sound editing, to name just a few things you can do with Flash) Hype offers no alternative.

I think Hype looks really cool, but at the same time I usually find these sorts of animations annoying on the web. So in that sense making it easier for people to muck up their websites with lots of pointless little animations may not really be a win. Still, talented people can probably do really cool things. I'd love to see what you could do with it MB, and I think you are sort of a perfect example of who this product might be for. You should check it out - only $29.99.
