The SJ Merc carried a letter today about Feinstein's assault rifle ban. The writter opined that a semi-automatic rifle is necessary for self-protection, because it allows faster fire than a bolt action rifle.
I assume this man has at least one semi-automatic rifle, so he's really not so much worried about himself as he is worried about the safety of the community at large. I'm not so sure I want my neighbors to have rapid fire capability. And if they do need such a thing, a Winchester repeater should do just fine.
