the girls boston

The Girls were amazing live an amazing (all-male) trio, one of the high points of Boston's late seventies/early eighties music scene, along with Mission of Burma, the Del Fuegos, etc.

bruno, u saw the girls live? they were sure none of the few eye whitnesses had survived. my frind mark was on guitar. someone recently found a tape at a boston college radio station of a live show and radio interview so they burned it and released it. previously only a single was available.

Would love to hear it sometime. Saw one of their early performances right at Mass Ave/Comm Ave. Maybe it was with Human Sexual Response. Girls were utterly fierce.

I was going to qualify fierce with "...for art students" , but it was just a jibe so I didn't. More Girls stuff, including a letter from David Hild, who now lives in Florida. I was at the BFVF show, (their first, I think). The pseudo-Carol band mentioned in the article featured two art-school teachers (Jeff & Jane, a couple, I think) plus Carol herself. They became The Rentals, which had the distinction of opening for The Clash at its first US gig, in Cambridge Mass. For more on this stuff you can also search for "38 Thayer Street", which was the address of a loft where many of these bands performed.

A friend of mine, an MIT-based video artist named Shelley, videotaped many of these bands (plus others from NYC, e.g. Contortions) at their Thayer Street shows, but I can't recall her last name.

  • Too much suede, needs more meerschaum.
