parole by words

this reminds me that my spell-checker dictionary at work is missing everything that starts with the letter 'c'. It's pretty funny: culture, curator, criticism -- they all get flagged.

I just read somewhere that the Wall St Journal and other papers are no longer allowing their editors to use spell-checkers because they lead to more mistakes. Apparently the editors just click “change all” without actually reading or thinking. They cited things like NY Attorney General Spitzer’s name being turned into “spit-fire”. Personally, I couldn’t live without spell-check; I use the grammar function too, but I have a lot of arguments with it, and often violate its rules. I wonder what long-term effect it will have on our prose?
