your page still doesnt fit in my browser. how is that line under "schwarz" created? and is anybody having similar problems?
- dave 2-08-2006 1:05 am [add a comment]

i think i know what it is. i put a blockquote within another blockquote. has it always been trouble? tom helped me with that ruled line under schwarz.
- bill 2-08-2006 1:08 am [add a comment]

how is it now?
- bill 2-08-2006 1:11 am [add a comment]

it is often, if not always, been trouble.
- dave 2-08-2006 1:11 am [add a comment]

not sure if its any different. might be a little better but i still scroll over to where half of the photograph is cut off before the body of text is entirely within view.
- dave 2-08-2006 1:14 am [add a comment]

thank you? hows the page lining up now?
- bill 2-08-2006 1:15 am [add a comment]

how about now. i had moved the wfmu schedule to a comment page so now i deleted the whole post. any change?
- bill 2-08-2006 1:17 am [add a comment]

still messed up. maybe it has something to do with the icons? im curious how it looks on other windows systems.
- dave 2-08-2006 1:23 am [add a comment]

im stumped.
- bill 2-08-2006 1:40 am [add a comment]

I'm still wondering why Dave couldn't see the Hillary ad when others could. I decided you had some ad-blocking software that was reading it as an ad, even though Jim says that kind of info can't be embedded in a jpeg.
Dave, what screen resolution are you using? (see Start/Control Panel/Display/Settings)
I can see Bill's page with no side to side scrolling at 1024 X 768 but I have to scroll at 800 x 600.

- tom moody 2-08-2006 1:47 am [add a comment]

nope, thats not it. same as you -- 1024 by 768. although i wouldnt be surprise about the ad blocking software notion, but id usually see that boxed red "x" when its blocked.
- dave 2-08-2006 2:05 am [add a comment]

Assuming the horizontal line under Bill's name is expressed as a percentage (pretty sure it says 100%--Bill can check in [editpage] toptext) it expands and contracts with the browser window. It would only be the culprit if expressed in an definite number of pixels. Bill's page is tight because the left hand picture is fairly wide. My left hand graphics are about half that size, and I never post anything wider than 580 pixels in the right hand column. That way my page can always be read on a 800 x 600 screen.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 2:06 am [add a comment]

OK, Dave is right, for IE--it does currently require a side scroll at 1024 x 768.
It is fine in Firefox.

- tom moody 2-08-2006 2:09 am [add a comment]

I still say it's those damn dotted lines in some of the posts (and big pictures when they're on the page).
If you view each post on Bill's main page individually using [link], you can see the horizontal line under "schwarz" is spaced correctly.
That's the best way to identify posts that are screwing up the layout.
I would recommend that Bill try setting his screen at 1024 x 768 periodically to see how it looks. I don't know how to do that with Apple, though.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 2:19 am [add a comment]

id use firefox but my machine has trouble with it.
- dave 2-08-2006 2:19 am [add a comment]

noted. thanks tom and dave.
- bill 2-08-2006 2:22 am [add a comment]

Well, since 60% of the world uses IE I think this is worth fixing.
Bill, it is definitely those dotted lines pasted in from other sites. I would recommend deleting anything but text and pictures in the 500 pixel wide range.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 2:22 am [add a comment]

i have never cut and pasted lines. i hold down the period key and let er rip. are you saying 60% of the world (ie all EI users) is seeing my page fucked up?
- bill 2-08-2006 2:28 am [add a comment]

Yeah--if you're holding down the period key, it looks as if solid periods don't wrap in IE (and probably other browsers.) I would recommend just * * * (asterisks separated by spaces) or something else short to break up text.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 2:45 am [add a comment]

Or even . . . . . .
But not ................

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaa im mean a a a a a a a h h h h h h a a a a a
- bill 2-08-2006 2:50 am [add a comment]

how about now?
- bill 2-08-2006 3:03 am [add a comment]

its better on my page but i can still scroll to 10% to 15% of the way into the photo. maybe that needs to be made smaller as tom had mentioned.
- dave 2-08-2006 3:24 am [add a comment]

maybe time for a new smaller pic. that ones pretty fuzzed out already. reducing it would pretty well kill it for me. are you getting those broken dot lines to roll or are they short enough not to need to roll over.
- bill 2-08-2006 3:28 am [add a comment]

This is why I recommended using something pretty short to break up text (ie the standard 3 asterisks separated by spaces) (below is a screen shot in IE):

Schwarz dots

I don't know why Dave is still side scrolling--I'm not getting it anymore, just these lines of punctuation poetry.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 3:43 am [add a comment]

that is a screen grab of what you are seeing on you page?
- bill 2-08-2006 3:46 am [add a comment]

Yes. Set at medium text size.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 3:48 am [add a comment]

It's a blockquote so the column is skinny.
Just 2 cardinal rules: text and pictures only.
Keep pictures small.
Your page will work in every browser if you obey these 2 simple rules.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 3:50 am [add a comment]

and who does that? my settings are off the shelf. wouldnt most everyone surfing in have similar settings to mine?
- bill 2-08-2006 3:51 am [add a comment]

If you use a smaller graphic on the left it might solve Dave's problem.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 3:52 am [add a comment]

hey dave i can cure you. put your hands on the radio...

(old imus bit)
- bill 2-08-2006 3:54 am [add a comment]

"my settings are off the shelf."

that many periods in a row may look great in 15 inch power book set at who knows what screen resolution

that is no guarantee anyone else will see it the same way.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 3:54 am [add a comment]

I think what i'm trying to say here is you are in the elite of the elite with a Mac laptop running Safari or even IE.

That type of user is a tiny fraction of my page traffic.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 3:56 am [add a comment]

hows it look on your 17" laptop tom?

- bill 2-08-2006 3:59 am [add a comment]

That's a 1440 (wide) x 900 screen, so your text is longer than your dotted lines. But those are exaggerated dimensions, more suitable for a wide screen movie than a page of text. And I never design for the laptop. I design for 800 x 600. When I did the blogging and the arts panel, someone had a 800 x 600 laptop and that's what they projected while I was talking. My page had no problems.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 4:14 am [add a comment]

My screen shot was big because I had the font set larger--I forgot. Here is what your front page looks like in IE at 1024 x 768, normal font (screen shot). Next I will link to a shot of page where you didn't break up the line of periods.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 4:50 am [add a comment]

Just the layout--the type is blurry from the screen shot
- tom moody 2-08-2006 4:52 am [add a comment]

Here's page 2. The left right column is wider because that page still has the strings of unbroken periods further down the page. Again just showing the layout as most of the world sees it.
- tom moody 2-08-2006 4:55 am [add a comment]

it fits now on my screen. thanks.
