im crazy about hardware store tool display / signage. for years i havent even looked at it on ebay because i didnt want to be tempted to buy any and have to store it. its is very close to my art interests and ive considered using them as pieces. purposeful objects turned into signs of themselves. frequently by the time they hit the flee markets the displays are picked over with tools sold off the sign by the store near the end of the sign life thus tools reverting to use value again. thats a lot of semiotic inversions! this stuff is still priced like junk (scrap value) and the postage usually only doubles the price. i recently won a crafstman (sears) display of kitchen drawer pulls and hinges. ill be posting more of these and hopefully not buying many. ...at least thats the plan.

thanks sally

"Equipment

(German: das Zeug)

A nearly un-translatable term, Heidegger's equipment can be thought of as a collective noun, so that it is never appropriate to call something 'an equipment'. Instead, its use often reflects it to mean a tool, or as an "in-order-to" for Dasein. Tools, in this collective sense, and in being ready-to-hand, always exist in a network of other tools and organizations, eg, the paper is on a desk in a room at a university. It is inappropriate usually to see such equipment on its own or as something present-at-hand"

thanks steve we have those at our local home depot. they are good resources and eye catching abstract groupings. it varies from tools in that its about fabricated material stock and the form of retail displayed materials. in this case metals. aluminum, bronze, steel. not hard to see where harry bertoia got his ideas for sound sculpture from. large scale steel fabricators use cool storage racks in their shops.
