an amazing image

thanks steve. i may have to send this out for a nice large pro print to be made and framed. the lower image is a scan of the rectangular (cropped) print and the upper images is a gerry rigged full scan of the sq neg. the print is vintage and from a cleaner younger time for the negative. any detective work on the lens or camera from commenters is appreciated. sq format could be from a cheep brownie on up. negative reads kodac and is trimmed and w/ out sprocket holes. approx 2" sq. print could be amateur dark room job. has light wear in middle top and bottom as though it was pinned to a bulletin board carefully so as not to perforate the paper. there are ashes in the pit but no real smoke or heat wave distortion. could be candid play time or slightly staged rather than real cooking. the pit look like a permanent camp site fixture w/ cement filled pairs of cinder block and heavy iron grate. note camp craft rain diverting trench around the tent.

I don't know, I'm seeing some steam coming off the pot, no?

Great photo.

The square image could be of better quality. I had to trick my scanner into seeing it by rigging an impromptu light box with a desk lamp. It deserves to be taken somewhere for a better scan.

you could be right. im just giving it my due diligence dose of skepticism.

Who would have known that tow-headed camp child would go on to be a top country singer? But seriously...

I like these versions but also like the super fuzzed out one with the eBay logo. It's an image that can live comfortably in multiple formats, I'd say.

thats right. the peoples version, the small digital file size advertising version, had just enough appeal to draw interest to these more detailed versions and get them sold. thats the point really that in the age of mechanical reproduction there is a great deal of nuance to various iterations. the internet (web exclusive) versions are only one dimensional (surface - non-object - virtual - free.) the cropped vintage print is a full on object. the negative is an object, but a tool in an interim stage, not an artifact for contemplation other than evaluating its state of repair.
