big 108 inch

Nice. Very nice. I'd rearrange the furniture for one of those. But this is the fucking most awesome monitor I have ever seen, even though it's not really new. I'd burn the furniture, and perhaps move a wall if necessary to make room for that beast. But I've been told the 32" HD monitor currently in the living room is "huge".

An interesting trend is faster displays. Sharp and Panasonic were showing 1920x1080@120p LCD displays. They don't take 120 Hz input, but they synthesize frames to boost 60 Hz source to 120 Hz frame rate, and thereby smooth the motion. Sensitivity to fast moving images is a weakness of LCDs.

Pioneer took a different approach to boosting display rates in their latest plasma displays. With 1920x1080@24p content coming off Blue Ray, they display each frame 3 times, essential a 1080@72p display (mimicing projectors which double or triple shutter each image to raise the flicker frequency high enough that the retina doesn't freak). The normal way to deal with 24 frame per second film (in 60 Hz countries) is using something called 3-2 pulldown. Each image is displayed either 2 or 3 times. (24 times 2.5 = 60) This 3-2 pattern "enhances" the inherent motion judder of film, making it look even jerkier than normal. Unfortunately, Pioneer didn't have a decent demo. A side by side of 3-2 and their "3-3" technololgy, using content with fast pans, would have been enlightening.
