The FM receiver seems superfluous, but an FM transmitter? Why?

tunes on your car radio? not clear.

Yeah, that's all I can think of too. Still seems like a backwards way to connect. And while we're on this topic, why don't car stereos have minijack inputs on them? Seems crazy since everyone has iPods. (Or maybe they do now and I'm just out of it?)

My new car has one (in addition to USB/iPod integration). I think they're becoming more common, but the car industry sometimes lags.

My old car has a cassette deck, which is the second best to an Aux Input. D's Subaru has CD, no cassette. FM is pretty ugly in dense markets. I've seen DIY instructions for how to hack the Subaru radio/CD player to add an Aux input. It's very ugly. Involves making a CD with 78 minutes of silence.

Another use of FM: sharing your tunes with someone sitting/walking near you with an FM walkman.

i think most newer after market cd players have mini jacks these days.
